Hello Members!
I hope that you like this new format bringing you the TAAA Electronic Newsletter! So many people were having a hard time viewing the photos I decided to create a special web site just for the newsletter. Let me tell you that this has been a huge job with at least 5 major crashes as I have tried many other different publishing sites. A tremendous amount of failed hours have gone into this venture, hopefully this one is going to work! ENJOY!
I Looked At A New Ranch South Of San Angelo,
on the South Concho River
The first dig at the Bacon Rind ranch outside of San Angelo happened this last weekend. I am just now getting back from the dig. I had to stay an extra day to visit a landowner south of San Angelo that expressed interest in having us over to his property on the South Concho River (A well known area for artifacts!)
So, Monday I went to the ranch and visited with the ranch owner. I showed him photos of the Bacon Rind dig and visited with him a while. When we got to the part about money, that is where I lost him! West Texas ranchers have been spoiled for many years by the amount of dollars that the trophy deer hunters pay them along with the big oil money many of them get.
I knew I was in trouble when he told me the story about an Oil Well Service company breaking a limb off of an Oak tree and they were charged (and paid, according to said landowner)! $1000 per inch! It was a 6" limb!
Anyway, after that I mumbled something about making enough to help pay the taxes on the ranch, etc., and received an "I'll think about it," in response. I think that was the same answer I got from that little gal that never went out with me when I was 16! HAHA Oh well, off to the next landowner!
DIG #1 - BACON RIND
West Texas! It is Tuesday and I have washed my car two times already trying to get the dust out and off of it! They can't even spell rane (oops) rain out there! But it does make for easy digging!
We ended up with 43 paid diggers at the Sat. and Sunday.
As my diggers drove up nearly every one announced how far they had driven. "473 miles to here!" one would say. Another said "We have been driving since 3 AM!" The Okies just smiled and said nothing because we know how far they come! Many have driven 18 hour round trips to come to the Harmeier ranch dig! See, it not as far as you thought! HAHA
We had about 13 campers, others drove in. As always, the dig started a little after daylight. I started the dig along the banks of the dry creek bed. We worked our way towards the center of the known camp site. Early it was really slow. An occasional broken point, flake knife, snub nose scraper, mano, etc., was found.
Pretty much everything was quite when Pat Even squealed out that she had a point! A few moment later she sounded off again! There was a trail leading to her hole as everyone was eager to see what she was finding! (See the photos.)
An occasional, "Here is one, here is a piece of one" could be heard when out of Bill Cox's hole came the surprise of the day! I heard the ruckus and saw just about everybody gathered around his hole. As I worked my way to him I gazed upon two beautiful Metates stacked upon each other! They were buried together! (See photo.) It had to be a wonderful feeling to unearth these two artifacts just as they had been laid to rest so many years ago until that day!
Because I have a dig early in the morning I cannot redo this page (after the first one crashed!) I am going to put some photos on here for you to see and enjoy!
Yes, that is pottery!
