FAQ's
Where are the dig sites?
We have dug in many areas of Texas. At this time we are concentrating on the the Colorado River close to Bastrop, Texas. This is a Paleo camp with points dating all the way back to first man - Clovis.
How do I sign up for a dig?
First, you have to become a member of the TAAA. Once your membership is in force you can sign up for a dig by phone or e-mail. We ask that you sign up at least 24 to 48 hours in advance.
Am I guaranteed a find?
We guarantee you the opportunity to find artifacts and that the places we take you are known ancient camp sites. Some people have a hard time seeing the artifacts even when others around them are finding artifacts. You have to get an "eye" to see the artifacts, they are covered with dirt and calcite.
Do I get to keep my finds?
Yes, in Texas the landowner owns the artifacts on his land. The TAAA has leased the property for the sole purpose of artifact hunting for its members.
Is science involved in a TAAA dig?
We used to take lots of data with each find but our information was not wanted by professional archeologist. We no longer take data other than photos. We document the finds using the members web pages. There are plans to do a "professional dig" with a state archeologist in the future. The TAAA is not affiliated or associated with any university or state archeological group.
Isn't it against the law to pick up artifacts?
No, that is a rumor put out by those who want to find and keep the artifacts for themselves. In Texas the artifacts belong to the landowner. The TAAA has a lawyer in the state capitol watching for bills that might endanger your artifact hunting rights.
Can anyone dig at a TAAA dig?
It is members only. No visitors are allowed at this time.
Are artifacts planted at the dig site?
No, the artifacts you find are "in situ". You are the first person to touch them since the maker left them thousand of years ago.
Will you have a site closer to my home?
You have to come to the artifacts, we cannot bring them to you. We go where you will have the best chance of finding your "Artifact of a Lifetime!"
TAAA?
The TAAA started as the "Texas Cache", the Texas Artifact Magazine in February 1994 by founder Bob McWilliams. This is our 14th year in the artifact business!
